Don Shanks BVSc
Don comes from East Coast stock having been born and raised on a sheep and beef station north of Gisborne. With this background and a rugby career during an era when front row players were allowed to be under six feet tall, natural progression lead on to rural veterinary practice. He first worked in Morrinsville then Napier and after stints over-seas to broaden his horizons, he settled in Taupo and is here to stay. Don has many years’ experience in mixed practice working on farm with cattle, sheep, deer & horses. He was an early pioneer when alpaca were first introduced to the region and has had close involvement with the export cattle industry. Over the years he has had comprehensive experience working as a companion animal practitioner in clinic. A founding shareholder of Taupo Vet Services and now VETPlus, Don is now clinical director in Taupo. He works mainly in Companion Animal surgery and medicine, however, his presence “indoors” now allows him to offer advice to rural clients as they visit the Taupo clinic.
