Help Your Pet Slim Down This Summer
After the festive season it is often a goal for the New Year to lose some weight, but have you considered your pets? Obesity is the most common medical problem in cats and dogs. Every extra 1kg your pet carries is equivalent to an extra 8kg for a human! Obesity exacerbates arthritis, heart and lung problems, leads to diabetes and could be a sign of an under active thyroid gland. In most cases it is caused by over-feeding your pet, not lack of exercise. It can cause harm to the joints and the heart if you try and make your overweight dog exercise more, especially in the hot weather, therefore changing to a low fat diet is the best way to lose weight safely.
At VetPlus we have a Weight Loss Club for those wanting to help their pet lose those extra kilos. This ensures your pet loses weight the safest way possible under the guidance of a vet and vet nurse. We recommend a vet check for all pets before they start the program. In some cases a blood test is done to ensure conditions such as diabetes, Cushing’s disease or hypothyroidism are not present. Regular weight checks with our vet nurse will help keep you on track.
